The peak representative body and advocacy group for the ICT industry in Australia, The Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA), yesterday (26 March) hosted their Navigating the Internet of Things summit at the National Convention Centre in Canberra. The overall theme of AIIA’s IoT Summit is the profound transformative impact of ubiquitous and intelligent ‘connectivity’ on the economy, society, business and government.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is the network of physical objects or "things" embedded with electronics, software, sensors and connectivity to enable it to achieve greater value and service by exchanging data with the manufacturer, operator and/or other connected devices.

See this Internet of Things infographic from Intel for a concise overview of the evolution of the IoT.

IoT Summit speakers include The Hon. Malcolm Bligh Turnbull MP; Glenn Archer, Research Vice President, Gartner; and Lee Hickin, Commercial Lead for Internet of Things, Microsoft

NEXTDC CEO Craig Scroggie is attending the event and MC'd one of three key segment themes for 2015: Transforming the Delivery of Services. Craig recently contributed an article to Deloitte’s Australian edition of their annual Tech Trends report on the business implications of the software-defined data centre (SDDC), you can read the full article here.

“Essentially, service optimisation is the fundamental driver of the software-defined, next generation data centre,” wrote Craig, “where IT investment shifts from supporting day-to-day operations to enabling innovations that both drives growth and supports powerful new ways of doing business, while uncovering the true cost of their IT investment.”

The Telsyte Microsoft Australia Internet of Things Decision Maker Study 2014 reports that:

  • On average, two thirds of Australian organisations investing in IoT activities experienced a 28 per cent reduction in operational costs.
  • Half experienced improved productivity or business efficiency from their IoT deployments. On average, organisations achieved 29 per cent productivity benefit.
  • Nearly 40 per cent experienced increased revenue. Those experiencing revenue growth on average experienced a one-third increase in revenue from IoT.
