M2 – Victoria's first Uptime Tier IV Constructed Facility

NEXTDC is pleased to announce that its new M2 Melbourne data centre has received Tier IV Certification of Constructed Facility (TCCF) from the Uptime Institute, the world’s leading independent data centre advisory and certification organisation. M2 is the second Australian data centre – and the second Asia Pacific colocation datacentre – to receive TCCF after NEXTDC’s B2 Brisbane facility.

Hosting an interconnected ecosystem

Since welcoming its first early access customers in November, M2 is now home to more than 40 of the world’s largest companies and local government departments and enterprises, including leading public clouds and companies providing essential services in finance, critical infrastructure and managed IT.

The facility has developed an exciting ecosystem right from the time of its opening with access to seamless cross-connection between M1 and M2 through NEXTDC Data Centre Interconnect, and AXON ethernet cloud on ramp for Amazon Web Services, Microsoft ExpressRoute, Google Cloud Platform, IBM Cloud, Oracle Fast Connect, and other cloud on-ramps.

Commenting on the Tier IV certification, Mr Scroggie, Chief Executive Officer said: “M2 is the latest in our national network of data centres, with Uptime Institute Tier IV Certification for Fault Tolerance. This certification represents the highest level of operational excellence and assurance for our customers and reflects the continued thought leadership and technical innovation that is driving NEXTDC’s success.”

World-first data centre design

The main feature of Tier IV certification is Fault Tolerance, and Certification of Constructed Facility shows that NEXTDC’s M2 facility has undergone rigorous on-site audit and testing by Uptime Institute to confirm its ability to withstand individual equipment failures or distribution path interruptions and maintain IT operations. M2 was previously awarded Tier IV Certification for Design Documents (TCDD), the precursor certification for Tier Certification of Constructed Facility (TCCF).

Uptime Institute Tier IV is the peak of the Tier Classification System created to consistently evaluate individual data centre performance. NEXTDC’s research and development methodology enabled the delivery of Tier IV data centres at capital costs per megawatt that are competitive with Tier III facilities. John Duffin, Managing Director, South Asia for Uptime Institute stated:

“Enhancing the strategies used in their Tier III data centres, in M2, NEXTDC has achieved Australia’s first Uptime Institute Tier IV Constructed Facility Certification for a hyper-scale, greenfield data centre and globally, the first with a Fault Tolerant N+1 redundant IP-DRUPS electrical system.”

Uptime Institute Tier IV Certification of Constructed Facility was received by NEXTDC Brisbane B2 in October 2017, and is also intended for Sydney S2, which is expected to open in 1HFY19.
