NEXTDC brings digital transformation to the edge and wins international recognition for Port Hedland at DCD Global Data Centre Awards


Queensland, Australia – 11 December 2023. NEXTDC Ltd (ASX:NXT), leading data centre provider, announces its recently launched Pilbara data centre, PH1 Port Hedland, has beaten global competition to secure the prestigious Data Center Dynamics (DCD) Global Awards ‘Edge Data Centre Project of the Year 2023’. The recognition comes in the wake of the successful launch of PH1 Port Hedland, which is the first data centre of its kind in the Pilbara region for NEXTDC.


The need for a high compute capabilities in the Pilbara was driven by the technology and infrastructure gap in the region with several digital transformation strategies across the mining and resources sectors driving the need for highly resilient, inter-connected and secure infrastructure. NEXTDC’s innovative edge-based strategy is brought to life by facilities like PH1 Port Hedland and meets the growing demand for ultra-speed connectivity to cloud services and critical infrastructure co-located in regional Australia.

With a total capacity of 1.5MW, PH1 Port Hedland has been engineered to support the highest levels of operational resilience and is backed by NEXTDC's industry leading service guarantee of 100% uptime. PH1 Port Hedland and all NEXTDC’s new edge sites will be interconnected to NEXTDC’s nationwide digital ecosystem via AXON, NEXTDC’s elastic interconnection services platform.

Adding to the already impressive capabilities of PH1 Port Hedland, the facility will also feature direct access to the Vocus’ ‘Project Horizon’ fibre network, a new 2,000km fibre backbone through the Pilbara region providing mining and resource businesses with secure, low-latency, high-capacity connectivity for mission critical operations.


The Data Centre Design Global Awards, are renowned in the industry and recognise excellence and innovation through a panel of international industry experts. The ‘Edge Project of the Year’ award category was judged based on five key areas including business case, project management, meeting project objectives, key innovations, and wider impact.
