Scaling Australia’s Sovereign AI Cloud

Australia has the energy, connectivity and ambition to export AI capability, not just consume it. That ambition only becomes capacity when sovereign compute is built at scale, at home.

Sharon AI runs a full-stack AI cloud platform on top of GPU infrastructure, serving workloads from fraud detection and weather mapping to human genome research. Scaling it at pace, without compromising on speed, security or sovereignty, is where the infrastructure partner becomes decisive.

Reaching beyond the GPU

Deploying AI at scale goes well beyond the GPU. Power density, cooling and interconnection decide whether a neocloud can grow, and how fast. Australia’s constraint is not compute. It is reachable compute: capacity that can be contracted, connected and consumed.

For Sharon AI, that means securing high-density capacity quickly, running it without interruption, and reaching time to first token sooner, the point where a customer’s investment starts producing value. Where data sits matters too, and not only for regulated industries.

Trust and speed

Andrew Leece names the two factors behind the decision.

“When we look to an infrastructure partner, we need to consider trust and speed.”

Trust came from certification. Every Sharon AI workload runs onshore in an Uptime Institute Tier IV certified facility, the highest classification for resilience, with a partner also certified in the NVIDIA DGX-Ready Data Center program and Certified Strategic under the Australian Government’s Hosting Certification Framework. Few providers hold all three.

“Finding a data centre partner who is NVIDIA certified, government certified and even Tier IV uptime certified was the holy grail.”

Co-designed, and running today

Speed came from how the infrastructure was built. Rather than taking standard space, Sharon AI co-designed facilities with NEXTDC as sites came out of the ground, engineering power, liquid cooling and connectivity together for AI factories built on NVIDIA DSX and energised today, not promised in a pipeline.

The result is measurable efficiency. Lower-PUE infrastructure means more efficient token generation and lower energy consumption, shortening time to first token and speed to market. Designing the facility around the workload, rather than fitting the workload to the facility, is what makes high-density AI deployable at speed.

Interconnection for commercial reach

A GPU cluster with no route to market is a stranded asset. What turns compute into commercial value is reach, and reach is where interconnection becomes a point of difference. Through NEXTDC’s AXON connectivity network featuring direct access to the world’s largest cloud platforms, Sharon AI can explore new market opportunities and collaborate with the partner ecosystem of technology platforms, service providers and co-located organisations.

This technology ecosystem is deployed across the same national infrastructure fabric, ensuring customers can seamlessly consume Sharon AI alongside the clouds and networks they already use, shortening the path from provisioning to production.

“Connectivity plays an incredibly important role in an AI factory, and Sharon AI will be able to take advantage of our AXON fabric. Our focus is to turn energy into intelligence, and to work with companies like Sharon AI to turn their investment into revenue.”

Operational certainty at scale

Certainty is the quiet differentiator. NEXTDC’s infrastructure holds security, sovereignty and uptime steady, so customer workloads run without interruption. That certainty is operational, not just contractual: resilient power, layered physical and network security, and hands-on support at every site.

“Having a hands-on infrastructure partner like NEXTDC allows us to sleep better at night. We’re able to deliver services confidently and reliably every day.”

Andrew Leece, Co-founder and Head of Strategic Partnerships, Sharon AI

The experience is consistent across NEXTDC’s national footprint, so Sharon AI expands site to site without re-engineering how it operates.

Turning energy into productive compute

As neoclouds become the primary way incremental GPU capacity reaches the market, the Sharon AI and NEXTDC partnership shows how sovereign AI gets built in Australia: energy turned into productive compute, interconnected with the commercial fabric that makes it usable.

“As neoclouds become the new delivery mechanism for incremental GPU capacity, we’re excited to be working with companies like Sharon AI to deliver on that capacity here in Australia.”
